A kind of film company

Film finance

Film finance companies: who works there and what each of them does

A film finance company assembles the money that pays for a film: the stack of sources, each with its own conditions and its own place in the repayment order, that is called the finance plan. Forget the trading floor; this is a small office in Soho or Fitzrovia with three to fifteen people in it and rarely any departments at all.

No two films are financed the same way, but the building blocks are standard: the UK tax credit, pre-sales, gap lending against unsold territories, equity, public money and co-production funds. The company fits those blocks into a plan that adds up to the budget and then closes it, which means every contract signed, every condition ticked and the money in a production account so that pre-production can start. Berlin in February and Cannes in May are two weeks a year each; the other forty-eight are spreadsheets, scripts and a filing system.
