Publicity and marketing

Publicity and marketing: who works there and what each of them does

Nobody sees a film by accident. Somebody chose the poster image, argued over the trailer, decided which magazine got the first interview and which Friday the film opened on, and that somebody was a marketing and publicity team.

Most of these jobs sit inside a distributor, which buys the UK rights and then spends the prints and advertising budget on making the country want to see the film. Sales agents, production companies, the studios' UK offices, exhibitors and streamers all have marketing people too, and a great deal of the work is done by outside specialists: publicity agencies, creative agencies for the key art, trailer houses, media agencies, junket producers, crews and photographers. A campaign runs for about three months before release, with the heaviest four weeks at the end.
