Stunts and special effects

Stunts and special effects: who is in them and what each of them does

Two separate trades that are booked in for the days that need them: stunts for the action, special effects for anything that has to break, burn, smoke, rain or explode in front of the lens. MFJF's courses meet both from the outside, so this page is short on purpose.

Neither of these is a department you can walk into as a runner, and MFJF does not yet have a Foundations course for either, so the honest version is this: the courses describe what the two trades do on a unit and how every other department has to work around them. Special effects supply the rain, the wind, the fire, the breakaways and the squibs, and they are their own department with their own rigs that nobody else touches. Stunts rehearse with the actors in prep and run the action on the day, with a briefing and usually a medic standing by.

MFJF has no Foundations course for either trade, and nothing here has been filled in from outside them. The words are My First Job In Film's. © My First Job In Film 2026.
