VFX

The VFX department: who is in it and what each of them does

Visual effects are every picture in a finished film that could not be captured by the camera on the day, and most of it is invisible: a sky replaced, a crowd multiplied, a modern lamppost painted out. A VFX house is a factory with a fixed order of operations, and everyone in it sits somewhere in that order.

Work begins long before post: a supervisor and a producer break the script down shot by shot and put a price on it, and the supervisor is often on set collecting the lighting and camera data the artists will need a year later. When editorial locks a scene, the shots are turned over with their plates and their counts, and each one travels the pipeline from prep to 3D to comp, round and round the review schedule until the client approves it. Two ladders lead out of the runner's desk: production and technical, and job adverts sort artists into 2D and 3D.
